Muscat, Oman.  Fort Mirani, built by the Portuguese in the 16th. century, overlooks the city, whose rooftops are dotted with satellite dishes linking Oman to a 21st. century global communications network.  The sultan's palace, Al-Alam, is on the right.  Surrounding the town, and visible on the left, are chocolate-brown ophiolites, a metamorphic, igneous rock.
